Statistics show that China is now among the world’s energy-consuming heavyweights, with coal accounting for nearly 70 percent of total energy consumption. The heavy use of largely traditional energies has caused catastrophic damage to China’s ecological environment, turning the country into a principal producer and user of ozone-depleting substances and the second biggest greenhouse gas emitter.In the face of these grim challenges, the Chinese Government has gone all out in recent years to transform the country’s energy-consumption pattern, advocating renewable energies, making energy use more economical, and focusing on developing more environmentally friendly fuels and technologies. These unremitting efforts have already borne fruit. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s overall energy consumption last year dropped as compared with 2007, while the use of cleaner or renewable energies had grown to 9 percent, up from 7.5 percent in 2005.For China, the development of cleaner energies represents an inevitable course the country will take both for now and in the long run, and it may also prove to be a new engine for more robust economic growth. Much more, however, needs to be done to reach that end. The government should formulate more relevant and preferential policies, while providing necessary funding, subsidies and other support for clean-energy businesses to emerge and grow. Min Weiguo, president of Nanjing International Group, said that Morgan Stanley originally planned to invest RMB 370 million in the mixed-use property project. Nanjing International Center, which is predicted to go into operation next year, will consist of a Westin Hotel, a St. Regis Hotel, a Grade A office building, shopping malls and high-end apartments. The entire project has a potential floor area of around 480,000 square meters, of which phrase one will account for 227,000 sq m and phrase two will account for 250,000 sq m. Reportedly, Morgan Stanley is in talks with SOHO China Ltd<0410> to sell an abandoned and unfinished property project, Shanghai Dong Hai Plaza, for RMB 2.5 billion. An insider in the property industry said that the deal might be done before the end of this year. GreenTech Automotive Inc. planned to break ground on a $6.5 billion plant on 1,500 acres in Tunica County, south of Memphis, Tenn. The company’s owner, Xiaolin ”Charles” Wang, said the plant would eventually employ 4,500 people and produce up to 250,000 fuel-efficient cars a year. The company hopes to build affordable cars matching lower emissions and fuel-consumption standards that President Barack Obama’s administration wants automakers to meet by 2016.
